New Podcast: Nature of Competition
A new podcast episode entitled “Nature of Competition” is now available. It is part one of a three part series on “Spotting a Great Business”. Part two will discuss Phil Fisher’s writings in greater detail.
Originally, the discussion of Fisher was planned for part one. However, I’m trying to switch to doing more frequent, shorter podcasts. I don’t want them to run over thirty minutes. My rant on the nature of competition in various industries is quite long. It eats up almost the entire podcast. But, I think it’s well worth it. This is a very important and often overlooked subject.
Summary: A discussion of the nature of competition in various industries. Video game publishers and airlines are contrasted to explain why some industries support several profitable players, while others do not support any at all. Toys, movies, and pharmaceuticals are among the other industries briefly touched upon.
Mentioned: Microsoft (MSFT), Continental (CAL), Hasbro (HAS), Mattel (MAT), Electronic Arts (ERTS), Activision (ATVI), Pepsi (PEP), Coca – Cola (KO), Energizer Holdings (ENR), Proctor & Gamble (PG), Wal – Mart (WMT), Timberland (TBL), Jakks Pacific (JAKK), Overstock.com (OSTK), Google (GOOG).
