The New York Times Company

The New York Times Company (NYT): Well, there’s the flagship paper, plus the Boston Globe, about a dozen smaller papers, two radio stations, a handful of TV stations, and About.com.

The company also has equity stakes in several other business including a regional New England sports network which makes them part owners of the Red Sox (for some strange reason they’ve chosen not to play this fact up in their flagship paper). They also have an equity interest in the Discovery Times Channel and a newsprint business.

Some have suggested TimesSelect as an eventual savior for the flagship business. It may make the company money, but it will cost them their franchise (online news readers aren’t sticky customers, and there’s real competition on the web – something the Times as a dominant daily isn’t used to dealing with). You can read about the progress of the TimeSelect program at the Media Stock Blog.
